Gardener’s Supply’s new Kitchen Garden Planner includes tools like a drag and drop planting map

Burlington, VT (PRWEB) March 11, 2009

According to recently released survey results from the National Gardening Association (NGA), a $ 70 investment in home food gardening can yield, on average, a $ 600 return on the investment.

“These numbers are based on a $ 2 per pound in-season market price of produce grown in a national average garden size of 600 square feet with typical yields from the most popular vegetables,” said NGA’s Director of Research Bruce Butterfield.

In response to a dramatic increase in the number of U.S. households growing vegetables for the first time, Gardener’s Supply has created a new online Kitchen Garden Planner (KGP). The KGP online tool was created in response to the increased volume of questions from new gardeners as basic as “How do I start?” and “What should I grow?”

“We want new vegetable gardeners to have a fun and rewarding experience right from the start” said Kathy LaLiberte, Director of Gardening for Gardener’s Supply, a Vermont-based earth-friendly gardening company. “We designed this playful, interactive planning tool to take away the worries of what, when and how to plant a successful vegetable garden.”

View Now – Direct Link to Online Kitchen Garden Planner:

http://www.gardeners.com/Kitchen-Garden-Planner/kgp_home,default,pg.html?SC=XNET9009

Gardeners using the new online tool will have access to five different features: a selection of six pre-planned vegetable gardens, an interactive design-your-own-garden map, a guide to planting & care, a vegetable encyclopedia and a list of recommended supplies and accessories.

Using the interactive design tool, gardeners can select from among 30 different vegetables and ‘click and drag’ plant icons to a 3′ x 6′ garden. The tool displays how many of each plant — carrots, beets, cucumbers, etc, — will fit into each 1′ x 1′ section of the garden. It also provides step-by-step planting and care instructions, including a soil calculator to determine how much soil you’ll need to fill your raised bed garden. For those who’d rather have an expert do the planning, there are pre-planned gardens with printable planting maps available, including the ‘Plant It & Forget It Garden’ and the ‘Cook’s Choice Garden.’

The company, well-known for its practical, garden-tested products is also expanding its’ already wide selection of vegetable gardening products. Some new offerings include the Forever Raised Beds, the Self-Watering Raised Bed, Potato Bins, Cascade Planters, a stylish new look for their Tomato Success Kits and more.

In 2009, the number of households growing some of their own vegetables, fruit, berries, or herbs could increase by 7 million households (19%) to 43 million according to Butterfield.

The primary focus of our business – for the past 26 years – has been organic vegetable gardening. This renewed interest in growing your own food is very exciting. We believe strongly that food gardening is an important way for people to reconnect with nature, family, community and themselves,” continued LaLiberte.

Gardener’s Supply is employee-owned company of avid gardeners providing gardening-related products and information via their catalogs, website and retail stores. Located in Burlington, Vermont, the company has won many awards for its patented products and innovative business practices. Gardener’s Supply can be found on the web at gardeners.com. Gardener’s Supply donates 8 percent of company profits to gardening-related initiatives and organizations working in the areas of sustainable agriculture, the environment and hunger relief.

GREEN Products Biodegradable and Compostable Declare Independence from Petroleum

Biodegradable Products from GreenPaperProducts.com

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) June 29, 2010

GreenPaperProducts.com, an Eco-friendly company is working diligently in their category of disposable tableware to create a better environment for generations to come by limiting the amount of waste entering America’s landfills. By offering a GREEN products line of biodegradable and compostable tableware, Green Paper Products customers can be one step closer to an earth friendly way of life.

These disposable and compostable choices are a great alternative to the typical petroleum based products, reducing and hopefully eliminating much of our future dependence on petroleum. The potential environmental disasters coming to our landfills might be avoided by everyone taking a more proactive stance. Just one small step towards becoming more Eco-friendly can help and one of those first steps can be composting.

Composting is a process that can be done by anyone more easily than imagined, done nearly anywhere, and on a small or large scale. If a material is compostable, it breaks down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass at the same rate as paper. Compost is a combination of decomposed plants and animal materials and other organic materials that decompose into humus — a rich nutrient-filled material — which increases the nutrient content in soils. This creates rich, moist, productive soils that can help reduce or even eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers, and promote higher yields of agricultural crops.

More and more gardeners in the know are coming to love composting and taking advantage of it by producing more colorful yards and more productive gardens. Composting holds benefits that produce results visible today as well as in the future. Along with adding nutrients into the soil, compost has the ability to actually clean the soil it is introduced to. “Within 50-100 days of composting Green Paper Products, you can have clean, nutrient rich soils” said Steve Saks the company’s Co-Founder.

Lawn Care Service Helps Homeowners Keep Lawns Healthy, says AllAboutLawns.com

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) May 18, 2007

To meet the steep consumer demand for professional lawn care advice, AllAboutLawns.com is offering visitors a free Lawn Analysis from TruGreen® (http://www.allaboutlawns.com/). AllAboutLawns.com, a comprehensive lawn and yard care resource, features advice and articles from lawn care professionals to help homeowners deal with yard and lawn care. TruGreen is the nation’s leader in lawn and landscape care, serving over 2 million residential and commerical customers across the United States.

Most homeowners prefer to use lawn care professionals to maintain a healthy lawn, says a recent nationwide survey conducted by International Communications Research for the Bayer Lawn Care Institute. Of the 400 homeowners surveyed, 90 percent preferred to have a professional diagnose and treat lawn problems.

“Lawn care professionals receive significant training,” says Tom Shotzbarger, a Bayer Lawn Care Institute Advisory Board member. “It’s this experience that customers value most.” Homeowners benefit from a healthy lawn both financially and aesthetically, says Shotzbarger, and lawn care professionals provide the “acute attention to detail” necessary to keep the lawn healthy and beautiful.

The importance of a healthy lawn is shown by an ongoing experiment at Arizona State University in Tempe. The experiment indicates that, even in a desert area, people tend to gather in grassy areas to socialize rather than in areas landscaped in a desert theme with no grass. ABC News, reporting on the experiment, says, “The lack of a lawn can mow down your social life.”

AllAboutLawns.com (http://www.allaboutlawns.com/) gives homeowners free professional advice about lawn care issues, including mowing, watering, fertilizing, aerating, landscaping, planting, repair, types of grass, killing weeds and using the proper tools. AllAboutLawns.com also gives links to lawn care service providers by state and province, as well as forums where visitors can ask the staff questions about a broad variety of topics related to lawns and yards.

AllAboutLawns.com is a comprehensive lawn and yard care resource. Visitors can ask staff questions in the lawn forum or benefit from hundreds of articles on seasonal lawn care, grass types, weed prevention, mowers and other lawn maintenance equipment.

Dear Garden Associates Announces the Addition of a New Lighting and Irrigation Division for 2012

Bill Dear, Principle of Dear Garden Associates

Pipersville PA (PRWEB) December 31, 2011

Bill Dear, Principle of Dear Garden Associates, has announced the addition of a new division within his burgeoning company: Lighting and Irrigation. Dear Garden Associates, known for creating breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, understands the importance of incorporating proper lighting and irrigation systems to provide a full return on homeowners’ landscaping investment.

“We are excited to have added this new division, which will be designing, installing and servicing new and existing systems,” said Dear. “We put a tremendous amount of energy and care into our gardens, and having a division that is dedicated strictly to these two essential functions of garden design, allows us to better serve our clients.” Dear, a professional horticulturist and dedicated environmentalist, emphasizes the importance of conserving natural resources. “During the growing season, carefully monitored irrigation systems not only protect a homeowner’s landscaping investment, but also conserve water,” stated Dear. “Landscape lighting systems that utilize today’s low-energy technology, not only enhance architectural details, patio and pool areas, but also provide safe walkways and security lighting.”

During 2011, the shortcomings of unmonitored systems in the northeast caused many local gardens to wither and lose their value. The amounts of water had been calculated by irrigation settings determined in April, and these settings were not sufficient to keep the plants alive during the heat and drought in July. Conversely, the same settings provided too much water during the rainy months of August and September, causing many plants to rot and die. “It is ironic,” said Dear, ” that this is often the result of unmonitored settings put on a system to ensure plant success.”

“This new division will further benefit our clients’ gardens,” said Dear, “while offering a higher level of service and care than any other firm in the region.”

About Dear Garden Associates

Dear Garden Associates is a full-service landscape design and maintenance company. Centrally located in Pipersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the company’s service area has grown to include Eastern Pennsylvania and all areas of New Jersey. Known throughout the region for breathtaking landscape design, Dear Garden’s core values include reliability, accessibility, and sustainability. The range of professional staff includes those skilled in horticulture, garden design, landscape architecture, and administration. Dear Garden also maintains five installation crews and two maintenance crews experienced in planting, earthwork, masonry, lighting, and irrigation. Shaw Achieves LEED Gold Certification for Georgia Facility

Shaw Achieves LEED Gold Certification for Georgia Facility

www.shawgreenedge.com

Dalton, Georgia (PRWEB) December 22, 2011

Shaw Industries Group, Inc. today announced it has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for Plant 95, an administrative facility on its corporate campus in Dalton.

Plant 95 is the first building in Dalton to achieve certification under the LEED Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance rating system, and the second Shaw facility to achieve LEED certification. The 32,335 square foot facility was previously first privately owned building in Dalton to achieve the US EPA Energy Star rating.

“The social and environmental responsibility of all our facilities is a fundamental part of our commitment to sustainability. We are continually assessing the infrastructure and processes at all our facilities to find new ways to increase water and energy efficiency, and to reduce the overall impact of our buildings,” Shaw Corporate Facilities Director Jason Bowling said. “Plant 95 is a great example of this commitment – our consistent investment in improving the environmental responsibility of this facility made LEED certification a logical next step.”

According to Bowling, the high level of energy efficiency that helped the building garner Energy Star also made a significant contribution towards the building’s LEED rating. Shaw Corporate Facilities Manager Rhonda Allen, one of the project leaders, agreed. “Thanks to the building’s already high efficiency, achieving LEED certification did not require extensive capital investment; instead, we simply had to work with USGBC to provide the appropriate documentation and tracking for the work we had already done,” Allen said.

In addition to energy efficiency, the building scored very highly in several other areas of the rating system, including water efficiency, water efficient landscaping, environmentally responsible sourcing and purchasing, green cleaning, waste reduction and recycling, and lighting, according to Allen.

“Plant 95 is now serving as a model for moving other Shaw facilities towards the LEED standard,” she said.

“Sustainable organizations require sustainable facilities,” said Shaw Vice President of Sustainability Paul Murray. “Achieving LEED certification for our key buildings is one of the many ways we are working to ensure we’re upholding the most rigorous standards for environmental efficiency in all facets of our business – from product to manufacturing to our physical infrastructure.”

Shaw’s Patcraft brand achieved LEED Gold certification for its Chicago showroom in early 2010, and several other Shaw facilities are currently at some stage of the LEED certification process, including two additional facilities in Dalton and the Shaw Contract Group showroom in Shanghai, Murray said.

Lawn Doctor Offers Five Quick Tips for Spring Lawn Care

Lawn Doctor Offers Five Quick Tips for Spring Lawn Care

Holmdel, New Jersey (PRWEB) March 10, 2011

As spring nears and green creeps back into the landscape, lawns across the nation will need a little extra help to recover from the harsh winter months and return to lush, healthy life. Lawn Doctor, the nation’s largest lawn care franchise with 450 units across the country, wants to help homeowners across the nation see their yards spring back to life.

“Spring lawns require extra care following chilly winter temperatures and dormant growth,” said John Buechner, Lawn Doctors Horticulture expert. “It’s also a critical time to take steps to insure a beautiful summer lawn. Fertilization, weed and pest control combined with proper mowing will stop problems before they start and keep your lawn looking its best.”

With over 40 years of experience in the industry, Lawn Doctor knows a few tricks when it comes to lawn care. Here are a few spring lawn care tips designed to promote a healthy yard well into the summer

Fertilization: Spring is a crucial time to fertilize because it replenishes the food reserves your yard draws from while dormant in the winter and fuels grass’ rapid growth phase. A top recommendation in lawn care is to utilize a balanced fertilizer consisting of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is best, with 30 percent of the nitrogen slow release. Don’t over-fertilize your lawn – no more than one pound of nitrogen should be applied per 1,000 square feet. A thick, healthy lawn also helps prevent weeds.

Weed control: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer on lawns to prevent grassy weeds from germinating. Spring broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clovers and plantains, are best prevented by maintaining a proper mowing height and fertilization. After a mild winter, annual weeds that germinate in the fall, like henbit and chickweed, will be more visible and require higher levels of broadleaf weed control through herbicides.

Pest control/Disease repair: Severe winters may increase the incidence of winter diseases such as snow mold and Bermuda dead spot. Proper cultural care is important in helping your lawn recover from stress related winter diseases. Properly timed fertilizer application and mowing at the recommended height for your grass type are two items that will aid in the recovery of your lawn.

Mowing: Contrary to popular believe, setting your mower at a very low height can actually increase weeds by exposing the soil surface to sunlight and removing stored nutrients in leaf blades. Cool weather grasses, such as bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues, should maintain a height of 2.5 to 3.5 inches. Warm season grasses, like bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine and centipede, should be kept at 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall.

Spring is also the perfect time to plant summer annuals and vegetables, but hold off on seeding until the fall when fewer weeds, more moisture and cooler temperatures allow seedlings to develop.

For those lacking a green thumb, Lawn Doctor now offers the 60 Second Quote, an online tool that provides a free lawn care quote via satellite imagery in just three clicks. Click here for more spring lawn care tips or an estimate on our lawn maintenance services.
